Combined Arms Army
On 7 September 1991, in order to rescue the Autonomous Republic from the existing crisis, protect its territory from Armenian incursions, and save the population from plunder and massacres, the State Defense Committee was established at the initiative and under the leadership of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev, who was Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
On September 7, 1991, the State Defense Committee was established under the initiative and leadership of the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the National Leader Heydar Aliyev, in order to save the Autonomous Republic from the current situation, protect its territory from Armenian attacks, and save the population from looting and massacres.
The 705th Combined Reinforced Motorized Rifle Brigade, one of the first national army units, was formed in the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic on 15 September 1992.
Following a successful combat path, the 705th Combined Reinforced Motorized Rifle Brigade was elevated to the level of a Motorized Rifle Division on 21 May 1995, and subsequently to the level of an Army Corps on 8 December 1998.
Pursuant to the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, dated 18 December 2013, “On the Approval of the Regulations of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” the Combined Arms Army was established on the basis of the 5th Army Corps.
Combined Arms Army consists of formations and units of various branches of the armed forces and honorably defends the territory of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of the Republic of Azerbaijan, including areas that share a border with Armenian armed formations extending over more than 275 km by air (405 km depending on terrain).
Military personnel of the Combined Arms Army demonstrated valor by taking part in the successful Gunnut operation in 2018, in the liberation of the occupied lands during the 44-day Patriotic War in 2020, and in the restoration of sovereignty during the anti-terrorist operation in 2023.
