June 26, 1918, the Independent Corps of Azerbaijan was organized on the basis of the Military Corps of Muslims. Lieutenant General Aliagha Shikhlinsky was appointed commander of the corps.

Formation of the Ministry of War
November 1, 1918, artillery general Samed bey Mehmandarov was entrusted in army building affairs, and organizing the Ministry of War.

March-April, 1920
Averting Armenian aggression in Karabakh
March-April 1920, the Republic’s Army totally thwarted the Armenian aggression against the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan in the Karabakh region.
1941-1945
The Great Patriotic War
Over 700 000 people were mobilized to army throughout the Great Patriotic War and death toll was about 300 000. 129 people were awarded with the title “Hero of the Soviet Union”. Azerbaijan produced 70-75% of the fuel consumed on the frontline in the years of the war.
National divisions such as 416th, 402nd, 396th, 223rd, 77th and etc. were formed of the Azerbaijanis. Respectively, divisions 77th and 223rd demonstrated act of bravery in the liberation of Poland and Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia. Division 416 experienced path of heroism from Caucasus to Berlin.

Foundation of modern army building
Nationwide Leader Heydar Aliyev launched the modern army building process by approaching to nation.
1993-1994
Horadiz operation
Horadiz town and 20 villages of Fizuli district were liberated as a result of the combat operations started under the leadership of National Leader Heydar Aliyev in December 1993 and lasted until the 6 January 1994. After entering to Horadiz town, soldiers of Azerbaijan Army hoisted Azerbaijan Flag over Horadiz town on 5 January 1994.

The heights around the Talish village of the Tartar region, and the height Lele Tepe of the Jabrail region were liberated off the Armenian occupation, as well as the positions over Jojuq Marjanli, Seysulan and Madagiz villages came under the control of the Azerbaijan Armed Forces as a rapid counter-attack on the night of April 1–2, 2016, in order to prevent a next aggression of the Armenian Armed Forces, and to provide the security of the civilians settled along the frontline territories.

 

May, 2018
Operation GUNNUT
As a result of the counteroffensive operation of the Combined-Arms Army stationed in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic held on May 2018, the village of Gunnut of the Sharur region, the Agbulag hill, Gyzylgaya Mountain, Khunnut Mountain and Mehridagh Mountain were liberated. The Azerbaijan Army took under control the village of Arpa of the Dereleyez region. Totally 11,000 hectares of the territory was liberated as a result of the combat operation. This operation allowed the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan to control the Yerevan-Yeghegnadzor-Goris-Lachin highway.

Military education system
In 1918, the foundation of military education system was laid in order to train national military personnel. In 1939, the Azerbaijan High Military School was founded and named Baku High Combined Arms Command School. March 10, 2004, the Azerbaijan High Military School was named after Nationwide Leader Heydar Aliyev.
1999-2018
Azerbaijan Army’s contribution to international security and peace
Azerbaijan Peacekeeping Forces made a contribution to the NATO peace support operations (KFOR) in 1999-2008 in Kosovo, and to the peacekeeping missions within the US-led International Coalition Forces in 2003-2008 in Iraq and NATO-led International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) in 2002-2014 in Afghanistan. Currently, Azerbaijan Army Peacekeeper contingent of 120 personnel takes part in ongoing “Resolute Support” mission conducted since 2015. The participation of the Azerbaijan Army in UN-led peacekeeping operations in the upcoming future is also under consideration.

According to the reviews of Global Firepower, Azerbaijan Armed Forces are 53rd in the rating of “the strongest army of the world” in 2018.
